Self Portrait

This is how I see myself

From the inside out, I have dark days remembering the bad choices I made, the memories float and I struggle to concentrate on today and the great possibilities.

At Home

This is one of my favorite pieces

The colors and shapes are meaningful, if only I could get it out with words. Pulling it all together I worked on my degrees in architectural drafting. Studying under Instructor Rolando Gonzalez, I made all A’s in every class. Architectural design is one of my many passions.

I slipped back to the dark side and yet I brought my paint to the streets and beaches of Santa Monica and Venice. Although homeless, I made it work somehow by selling some art. Nevertheless, I found myself in jail.

Now I’m living the ‘clean and narrow path’ and I’m finding my peace.

I did my time for my country but they sent me away with a kick due to “Don't ask, Don't tell”. I did nothing wrong. Three weeks later the mandate was rescinded. I received an Honorable Discharge also.

I worked with my mother Susan to build an art gallery and to our happy surprise the Art Gallery was a success. All of the artists flooded the walls with creativity and life. It lasted 5 years. I took to the street again , always running, looking for something more, actually just different. Something that simply fits ME. In this picture at a fine apartment in LA, I painted everything I could get my hands on.

Now I am living, clean and sober in LA. I stumbled onto The Watts Towers, an unbelievable Culture Center. They have The Watts Towers Art Center so I offered them a piece of my work as a donation to their collection.

And, as I hoped, THEY TOOK IT. It is a testament to inclusiveness and brotherhood.

I am very proud of this day because it is the first day of the rest of my path in giving and sharing new art life.

“Heading Away From the Ledge”

I am grateful and honored to feature this documentary filmed and produced by my  brother Henry Hopkins . It has been shown in film festivals in the US and abroad. It tells of the voyage of a family rescuing their loved one from drug addiction and mental disorders which so many can relate to.
